Don't Drip the Valley Down the Drain
by Heather MacNish

Did you know that flushing toilets account for roughly 40 percent of domestic water consumption? And that a leaky faucet can waste more than 15 gallons per day?

Spring has brought drought relief to the valley but wasting water is still a bad habit. Scenic Hudson wants you to know that a little effort can make a big difference. Use these money-saving household tips to conserve water:

* Fix plumbing leaks immediately.
* Run full laundry and dishwasher loads, and use energy-saving settings where available.
* Shave at the sink, not in the shower.
* Lower toilet float one inch or place a jug of water in the tank to reduce water flushed.
* Replace old shower heads, toilets, faucet aerators, dishwashers and washing machines with more efficient models.
* Take shorter showers or turn off water while soaping/shampooing.
* Don't run water when brushing teeth or shaving.
* Keep a water pitcher in the refrigerator.
* Don't water lawns/landscaping (grass will go dormant) and plant drought-tolerant, native species.
* Collect running tap water and use it to water plants.
* Don't fill your swimming pool or fill it lower than usual to decrease water splashed out.
