Scenic Hudson Offers Free Firewood to Residents

(COLD SPRING ) - Scenic Hudson will give away free, seasoned firewood at its West Point Foundry Preserve on Saturday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The firewood is available as a result of a tree thinning project undertaken to protect the archaeological remains of Scenic Hudson's historic West Point Foundry site. The firewood is available for residential use only, not for commercial use. The wood has been cut into stove-length rounds, which people will be allowed to split into manageable sizes before loading and transport. Due to the inherent risk involved in handling firewood, participants will be required to sign a release of liability form before moving any wood. For more information about Scenic Hudson's work at the West Point Foundry site, go to www.ScenicHudson.org/wpfp.htm. For more information about the firewood giveaway, contact Joe Kiernan at (845) 473-4440, ext. 265.

Directions to the site: From the intersection of Route 9D and Main Street in Cold Spring, Putnam County, take Main Street toward the river. Take the fourth left onto Rock Street, proceed to the end and turn right onto Kemble Avenue, which you will take to the end. Turn left past the gate to and proceed to the parking area.

Scenic Hudson works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital resource for residents and visitors. A crusader for the valley since 1963, we are credited with saving fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project and launching the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Today with more than 10,000 ardent supporters, we are the largest environmental group focused on the Hudson River Valley. Our team of experts combines land acquisition, support for agriculture, citizen-based advocacy and sophisticated planning tools to create environmentally healthy communities, champion smart economic growth, open up riverfronts to the public and preserve the valley's inspiring beauty and natural resources. www.scenichudson.org
