Transportation
The impact of modern transportation systems is among the most pressing environmental issues of the 21st century. Post World War II auto-dependent development in suburbs and rural areas, coupled with a decreased use of transit, has caused astronomical increases in the number of "vehicle miles traveled." This has contributed significantly to urban sprawl, which has consumed open space at a rate four times population growth and promotes more driving.

As a result, reduced tailpipe emissions have been more than offset by additional driving, creating more air pollution and associated public health problems. Urban storm water runoff, which washes gas, oil, brake fluid and anti-freeze off our roads and parking lots and into streams, is our nation's top water pollution problem.

Scenic Hudson promotes a new way of thinking about the relationship between transportation and land use to give us more choices with respect to the way we move around (mobility), which will, in the end, reduce transportation-related environmental impacts. Our principles of sound transportation planning involve techniques such as "context sensitive solutions", traffic calming, intermodal facilities for biking, walking, transit, and water-based options linked to community centers and pedestrian oriented neighborhoods.

The "walkable communities" and livable places that result will provide a healthful and positive environment in which to live, work and recreate. As we monitor plans for the Tappan Zee Bridge upgrade, transit enhancements and key transportation corridors throughout the Hudson Valley, we will be advocating for smart transportation - transportation linked to community and land use planning -- to ensure outcomes that protect our environment and our enhance our quality of life.
