SLC PULLS OUT!
SLC has decided not to appeal the tremendously strong ruling against its Greenport proposal by the NYS Department of State (DOS). The company has halted plans for a massive coal-fired cement plant in Columbia County.
Your letters and phone calls worked! In a 20-page ruling (PDF/106KB), DOS Sec. Randy Daniels made a damning indictment of the proposal, saying it would harm the people, economy and environment of the Hudson Valley.
Help us thank those who deserve praise.
Tell the decision-makers -- Gov. George E. Pataki and NYS Sec. of State Randy Daniels that you appreciate their defending our health and environment.
Background Information
St. Lawrence Cement (SLC) planned to build a mammoth cement plant, mine and riverfront transport facility in the City of Hudson and Town of Greenport in Columbia County, N.Y.
The proposed 1,800-acre industrial complex would have emitted 20 million pounds of air pollutants every year and caused irreparable harm to our health, environment and economy.
The Hudson Valley Preservation Coalition, formed by Scenic Hudson and other organizations opposed to the project, waged a campaign to stop the proposed plant.
